ISDR Clinical Scope

Is ISDR right for me?

We're a specialty practice, so we may not be a good fit for everyone. Here's a few things that we don't address — so you can decide before you book.

Faith-based counseling

ISDR therapists do not impose religious or anti-religious value systems on clients. We're not Christian counselors, LDS-integrated therapists, or biblical-integrated practitioners. Faith and existential topics often come up in our work, and they're welcome. Our faith-transition and mixed-faith couples specialties exist for clients navigating exactly that. The distinction is that we don't push you towards or away from religion — we work with whatever your relationship to faith currently is.

If you want a faith-integrated framework, try searching for a Christian counselor, LDS-integrated therapist, or biblical-integrated practice — clinicians who treat from within your faith tradition.

Court-mandated treatment or forensic evaluations

We're not set up to deliver court-mandated therapy or to provide forensic services — custody evaluations, fitness-for-duty assessments, competency evaluations, or other psychological legal work. These engagements require specific training, documentation workflows, and scope of practice different from ours.

If you want these services, search for a forensic psychologist, or a clinician with experience navigating court-system workflows.

Acute crisis stabilization

If you or someone you love is in active crisis, please reach out for stabilization care first. Call 988 for the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. We can be a good fit for ongoing work after stabilization, but we're not a crisis-response practice.

If you are in crisis, contact the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or call 911.

Addiction recovery program

ISDR is not a substance use disorder treatment center, addiction recovery program, or intensive outpatient provider. Substance use can show up as a clinical context — a partner in recovery, family-of-origin history, or processing the aftermath of an overdose. That's different from substance use being the thing you need treated. If addiction recovery is the primary clinical focus you need, we are not a good fit.

If you are looking for addiction recovery services, search for a licensed SUD treatment program, recovery-focused practice, or intensive outpatient (IOP) provider.

Generalist / Insurance-Only Therapy

Some of our clinicians work with Headway to accept insurance for individual therapy on diagnosable conditions (depression, anxiety, etc.). See the fees page for clinician-by-clinician details. For relational therapy (couples, relationship, and family) and most individual therapy, we're a self-pay specialty practice. ISDR doesn't accept insurance for relational work because insurance either doesn't cover it or reimburses too little to be sustainable. If you need insurance-only therapy across modalities, we may not be the right fit.

If you would like insurance-based or low-cost options, explore psychologytoday.com or graduate-program training clinics (UVU, BYU).

If you're in crisis: call 988 for the national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or dial 911 for local emergency services.
