Polyamory & Open Relationship Therapy

Therapy designed for polyamorous, open, and other non-monogamous relationships.

Our approach

Many approaches to couples therapy are incompatible with non-monogamous relationships (thus, the label "couples" therapy). In fact, some therapies even list non-monogamy as a rule-out factor for treatment. Some therapists alter existing couple therapy approaches to accomodate non-monogamous relationships. While this is helpful, the implementation varies by therapist and implicit monogamy biases baked into the approach still sometimes influence treatment.

Our approach re-built relationship therapy from the ground up to be inclusive of diverse relationship structures and orientations. Self-Determination Based Therapy (SDBT) is founded on universal psychological needs — not on assumptions about what a relationship is supposed to look like. SDBT honors the unique challenges that arise in non-monogamous relationships and integrates tools from traditional couples therapy approaches (like Gottman or Emotionally Focused Therapy) in a way that doesn't pathologize your relationship structure.

What we work with

  • Building agreements and boundaries that work
  • Navigating jealousy, compersion, and insecurity
  • Communication challenges
  • The opening up process
  • Feelings of betrayal or hurt
  • Navigating family, parenting, and external community expectations
  • Solo polyamory
  • How neurodivergence (ADHD, OCD, Autism spectrum, etc.) intersects with non-monogamy

Who we work with

We work with individuals, dyads, and larger constellations. Sessions might include a single partner working on their own experience, a primary partnership, or multiple partners when that's clinically useful.

We see people at every stage: those who are new to non-monogamy and working out what it means for them; those who have been non-monogamous for years and are navigating specific relational challenges; and those who are reconsidering their structure and working toward clarity about what they actually want.
