Reconnecting Adult Children & Parents

For older/adult children and their parents wanting to reconnect after distance, silence, or strained contact.

What it is

Family therapy is not only for families with young children or teens. We also work with families where the children are adults, and the relationships have become strained or distant over time. Family gatherings and holidays may feel tense or awkward. Feelings of regret, grief, confusion, or resentment may have built up. It's hard to know how to even begin repairing these relationships — and you may fear they can't be repaired at all.

At ISDR, family therapy is a strucutred space to examine the family dynamics and build a new way forward. We take a systemic approach — meaning we avoid labeling any one person as "the problem" — and we seek to create understanding where each person can speak, be heard, and find what's possible together.

What we work with

  • Walking on eggshells, or keeping conversations surface-level to preserve the peace
  • Long periods of silence — low contact or no contact at all
  • Past wounds that haven't been addressed, with neither side knowing how to begin
  • Adult relationships that needs renegotiation after years of being parent-child
  • In-law dynamics — new family relationships and expectations
  • Grandparenting dynamics

What to expect

Generally speaking, family therapy includes at least one adult child and one parent. As therapy starts each family member may meet with the therapist individually. Our relationship specialists will focus on the family dynamics causing the conflict to continue, pointing out personal and relational growth areas. Family sessions will typically provide space for people to share their frustrations, perspectives, and pain. The therapist can help facilitate communication skills that help to create new dynamics.

It's important to note that not every relationship can be reconciled, and sometimes distancing can be an important boundary. However, family therapy can help you figure out what's possible.
