Therapy for Depression
For people feeling empty, flat, numb, or hopeless.
What it is
You feel flat — like your life is colorless. It's hard to remember a time when things weren't this way, and you wonder if it's just who you are. Hope feels out of reach. Counterintuitively, the numbness might even hurt.
Depression is sometimes triggered by an event, like the loss of a relationship, of a version of yourself, or of a life you thought you'd have. Other times it seems to have no obvious cause at all.
Depression sucks because it doesn't just make life hard; it also drains your energy for getting help. At ISDR, we strive to compassionately meet you where you're at and offer a supportive environment for hope and growth.
What we work with
- Persistent numbness or flatness — around so long that it feels normal now
- Anhedonia — losing interest or pleasure in things that used to matter and give you joy
- Stuck after loss — death, divorce, or identity shifts that go beyond grief
- High-functioning depression — managing your life well enough on the outside but feeling empty inside
- Disconnection — from yourself, your relationships, or your sense of purpose
- Rumination and self-criticism — the internal voice that loves to highlight what you did wrong and what's wrong with you
- Depression co-occurring with anxiety, neurodivergence, or identity concerns
How we work
Our approach to depression uses Self-Determination Based Therapy (SDBT) as a framework, which means we look at depression through the lens of unmet psychological needs. Together, we will explore the conditions that led to your depression, and more importantly, the conditions that could lead to something different. SDBT explores the physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, and existential environment you are in and how we can build one that supports your wellbeing.
Our therapists draw on many evidence-based approaches to work with you. Some of our therapists draw on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, or Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help you build a different relationship with difficult internal experiences. Attachment-based therapies help address the relational sources of depression. We also use trauma-informed approaches to understand how past experiences may influence your experience of depression.
