Therapy for Neurodivergent People

For teens and adults with ADHD, autism, OCD, or other neurodivergences.

What it is

If you suspect you are neurodivergent, you may arrive at therapy feeling exhausted from years of masking or adapting to environments that weren't designed for you. Perhaps you've been called bright but scattered, capable but unreliable, "too sensitive," or "too much."

At ISDR, we don't view neurodivergence as a flaw — it's a different way of being in the world that has strengths and costs, and both deserve attention. However, understanding your neurodivergence is not the same as accepting every outcome it produces. Therapy is often about helping you design a life that fits the way your brain works.

What we work with

  • ADHD and rejection sensitivity — intense emotional pain triggered by perceived criticism or failure
  • Late diagnosis — when neurodivergence is discovered later in life
  • Masking and burnout — the cumulative cost of masking in social, professional, and relational contexts
  • Executive dysfunction — the difficulty with planning, organization, time management, and task initiation
  • ADHD and anxiety — the shame-avoidance loop, perfectionism, paralysis, and social anxiety
  • Identity and self-worth — explore a self-concept that doesn't only center around the ways you've struggled
  • Neurodivergence in relationships — how neurodivergence influences intimacy, conflict, and connection

How we work

ISDR uses Self-Determination Based Therapy (SDBT), which emphasizes finding and nourishing what you actually need, not what you're "supposed" to need. Other common approaches we integrate include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). We also use neurodivergence-specific workbooks and resources to supplement our work.

A note on late diagnosis

Receiving an ADHD, OCD, or autism diagnosis as an adult can be a significant experience. For some it can bring clarity and relief — a new lens for understanding your past and your struggles. It can also bring grief for the years of struggling without knowing why.

Our therapist Sarah has personal experience with this. As a late-diagnosed individual with ADHD herself, she understands how exhausting masking can be, the complex feelings following late discovery, and the challenges of adapting her environment to fit the way her brain works.

Specializing Therapists

Lived experience

Sarah Keegan is herself a late-diagnosed adult with ADHD. She brings both clinical training and personal understanding of what it means to make sense of your own history through a new lens.
